Posted on 27 May 2018

Stainless steel zip ties can be tricky to install. In this article, we provide several options for properly installing stainless steel zip ties, for example, on an exhaust with heat wrap.

How to easily install stainless steel cable ties!

Installing stainless steel zip ties can seem difficult, but with the right tools and techniques, it's easy. Below, we discuss three methods for properly installing stainless steel zip ties, including the advantages and disadvantages of each option.

Option 1: Tighten with normal flat-nose pliers

Using flat-nose pliers is a quick and easy way to tighten stainless steel zip ties. The pliers are usually already in your toolbox, so you can get started right away.

  • Advantages: Simple and always available.
  • Disadvantages: You often can't apply enough force, so the zip tie isn't tightened sufficiently. With too much force, the clasp can even be damaged. This method has the highest chance of loose zip ties, which is detrimental for applications such as exhaust wraps.

Option 2: Tighten with a Design Engineering cable tie tool

Design Engineering has developed a handy cable tie tool to easily and professionally tighten stainless steel Ball-Lok zip ties up to 12mm wide. This tool is not suitable for Multi-lok variants. This tool is ideal for working in confined spaces and ensures a tight result.

  • How to use it?: Slide the end of the tool onto the zip tie and turn to tighten it. This tool works with all ratchets with a 1/4” drive.
  • Important: A stainless steel zip tie with the Ball-Lok clasp will always spring back slightly before it locks. Therefore, ensure there is a sufficiently thick insulation layer to support this spring travel.
  • Advantages: Time-saving, easy to use, and suitable for professional use. The tool is made of hardened black coated steel, which guarantees years of use. Moreover, the tool is very affordable.
  • Disadvantages: Only suitable for specific types of zip ties such as Ball-Lok variants.

Option 3: Tighten with a professional cable tie gun (Ball-Lok)

The cable tie gun is specially designed for Ball-Lok zip ties and is ideal for professional use. The tool makes it easy to tighten zip ties and, if necessary, trim them neatly.

  • How to use it?: Place the zip tie in the gun and pull the handle to tension the zip tie tightly. Use the built-in cutting function to easily trim the excess length.
  • Applications: Perfect for all types of cable ties, such as zip ties, tie-wraps, and pull ties. This makes the tool versatile and suitable for various projects.
  • Advantages: Ergonomic design for comfortable use. Durable thanks to the steel it's made from. This gun tightens the zip tie and cuts it if desired for a neat finish.
  • Disadvantages: Only works with Ball-Lok ties, so less universal than other methods.
