About Stuffing box packing
Gland packing seals rotating shafts and spindles in pumps, valves and agitators. The braided, square packing cord is compressed into the stuffing box around the shaft and holds back liquid and gas while the shaft keeps turning.
The right packing material
PTFE packings (pure, graphited or with SLX lubricant) are highly resistant to chemicals and self-lubricating; the pure version is also available food-safe. Graphite packings, pure or reinforced with Inconel, handle the highest temperatures up to 600 °C. Aramid versions, as zebra or ladder weave or on the corners of graphited PTFE, reinforce the packing where wear is greatest. There are also carbon fibre, phenolic fibre and ramie fibre packings for specific media. The material construction is stated in every product title and specification.
Frequently asked questions
What exactly is gland packing?
A braided sealing cord with a square profile that is laid around the shaft in the stuffing box of a pump or valve. Tightening the gland follower compresses the cord slightly so it seals the shaft without blocking rotation.
Which gland packing materials are there?
Among others pure and graphited PTFE, expanded graphite, aramid, carbon fibre, phenolic fibre and ramie fibre, also in combinations such as aramid-reinforced corners.
Up to what temperature is gland packing resistant?
Depending on the material 120 to 600 °C; the temperature resistance and dimensions are listed per packing on the product page.
