How do you choose the right thickness of stove rope?

Posted on 27 February 2024

Avoid a wrong purchase by correctly measuring what stove rope is needed. Measuring is knowing; we explain how you can do that step-by-step below.

How do you choose the right thickness of stove rope?

How to replace the stove rope in your wood stove door

Replacing the stove rope in your wood stove is important for the stove's safety and efficiency. Below, you'll find a simple explanation on how to choose and install the new stove rope.

Step 1: Inspect the old stove rope

Open the stove door and carefully remove the old stove rope. Pay attention to the thickness of the stove rope, as it may have compressed from use. Find a section that is still in good condition to use as a guide for the new rope.

Step 2: Measure with a ruler or caliper

Measuring the old rope

Preferably use a caliper to determine the width of the old rope. Measure the rope's thickness as shown in the image below; do not apply pressure to the rope when measuring. A caliper is a measuring tool that allows you to take very precise measurements, much more accurately than with a regular ruler. If you don't have a caliper, you can place the rope on a ruler or tape measure to determine the diameter.

Measuring the groove

Preferably use a caliper to measure the width of the groove in the door where the stove rope was located. This helps in choosing the correct thickness and width of the stove rope. The new stove rope should be about 2 mm thicker than this measurement, so that it seals well and stays in place once it is compressed. If only the groove can be measured, we recommend performing STEP 3 for verification.

Step 3: Use clay or dough

This method is a very effective way to determine the required thickness. Press a strip of clay or dough into the groove where the stove rope should go. Close the door to compress the material. Then measure the thickness of the compressed material. The new stove rope should be approximately 2 mm thicker than this measurement, so that it seals well and stays in place once compressed.

Step 4: Check the manual

Consult your wood stove's manual for recommendations on the type and thickness of stove rope to use.

Step 5: Purchase or order the new stove rope

Order the stove rope directly through our webshop or contact us to find the correct size and type. Make sure to choose a stove rope that is slightly thicker than the thickness you measured with the clay or dough.

Step 6: Install the new stove rope

Apply a layer of our heat-resistant adhesive into the groove. Then, place the new stove rope in the groove and press it gently. Ensure the rope is evenly seated. The door should close easily without the stove rope being compressed too much, which would mean the rope is too thick and the door would not close properly.

By following these steps, you can determine the correct thickness of the stove rope to ensure an effective and safe seal for your wood stove. Correctly replacing the stove rope contributes to optimizing combustion efficiency and reduces the risk of smoke leakage into the living space.
